This report presents the findings of the Lodestar Fellows, a cohort of student researchers who spent the 2025-26 school year investigating the disconnect between grades and proficiency at their school.

The 2026 Lodestar Report captures a year of student-led research into the disconnect between grades and proficiency at one Oakland public high school. The Lodestar Fellows discovered a 43 point gap between what students believed about their reading levels and what state test data actually showed, along with clear recommendations for change.
2024-25
Led by Oakland students, this report exposes the real reasons behind chronic absenteeism—disengaging instruction, unmet mental health needs, and a lack of relevance in schools. It offers both community-driven and policy solutions to help schools become places students want to show up to.

We need to understand how our youth are experiencing not just education, but the world right now. The youth we talked to in Milwaukee are in tune. They are in tune with what their schools need and what the world is missing.

The focus of the report was mostly on principals, while countless other researchers and organizations have done extensive work looking at the impact of Black educators . Students of all races do better when they are exposed to effective Black educators and Black principals .
